Learning Mentor – Fixed Term Maternity Cover for 12 months

Salary grade 3 scp 9 – 22:  £20,903 to £27,041 pro rata  (actual salary £16,274 to £21,537)

Job Hours: 32.5 term time only

We are fortunate to work with children who are highly enthused and very keen to learn and a community who are supportive and friendly.  Our staff work hard and are dedicated to providing the highest quality teaching and learning for the children in our school.  We are looking to appoint a Learning Mentor to join our pastoral team and cover maternity leave.


The successful candidate will work closely with teachers and other support staff to support children with varying social and emotional needs.  The role is primarily class-based in the mornings, working with children to enable them to successfully access learning and providing them with the necessary pastoral and learning support to help them succeed.  The afternoons will be a mix of class-based support and 1:1 or small group sessions, supporting the social and emotional needs of the children. There will also be time for planning and meeting with the wider pastoral team.


The core role involves:

  • Supporting the vulnerable, underachieving or disengaged pupils.
  • Supporting the pastoral needs of pupils both in and out of the classroom.
  • Engaging pupils at break and lunchtimes with their social interactions
  • To be able to use de-escalation strategies when dealing with challenging behaviour.
  • Leading 1 to 1 and small group activities aimed at improving social interaction and emotional well-being
  • Working alongside our Pastoral Team which includes another learning mentor, a family support worker, an Attendance Administrator and Assistant Headteacher (Inclusion, Behaviour and Attendance)
  • Liaising with parents and outside agencies as necessary


We are looking for a learning mentor who:

  • Has experience of working with children who need additional support (e.g. Learning Mentor, Therapist, Family Support Worker, Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Social Worker, etc).
  • Is caring, compassionate and is keen to make a difference to the lives of our pupils.
  • Has a good knowledge of the social, emotional and mental health needs of pupils.
  • Can see beyond the behaviour that may be presented - has a good understanding of children’s lived experiences and can help develop resilience, confidence, self-esteem and self-regulation.
  • Can build positive relationships with pupils and their families.
  • Can work independently and use their own initiative.
  • Can plan and carry out interventions, and review and assess impact.
  • Can support and advise staff to remove barriers to learning so that children can access their learning and achieve their full potential.
  • Is committed to engaging and inspiring our pupils and can make a real difference to their learning and well-being.
  • Has good communication skills and can liaise effectively with other staff, parents and outside agencies.
  • Can adapt quickly and show strong commitment to meeting children’s individual needs.
