Job Description for Middle Leaders
Responsible to:
Assistant Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, Headteacher, Governing Board
Main purpose of the post:
- Undertake the role of class teacher (as per class teacher job description)
- Assist the phase AHT in ensuring a high standard of provision for all pupils across the curriculum within the phase.
- Lead, manage and develop the specified curriculum areas across all key stages
- Impact on educational progress beyond assigned pupils
- Actively participate in whole school self-evaluation and school improvement planning
- Share responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school
- Contribute to the overall ethos/aims of the school
Leadership and management role:
- Contribute to the vision and ethos of the school
- Be a member of the extended middle leaders’ team and attend meetings
- Liaise with colleagues to contribute, implement and evaluate the success of the School Improvement Plan
- Lead a team of staff within a specified curriculum area
- Act as an effective role model in terms of teaching, behaviour management and classroom management
- Support the SLT in monitoring and reviewing provision within the specified curriculum areas in terms of:
- breadth and balance ensuring that the schools’ curriculum map is being followed
- review pupil progress through the analysis of data ensuring information is used for planning and target setting across the curriculum
- ensuring completion and transfer of records and implementation of all policies
- differentiation and personalised learning goals for pupils (together with the SLT)
- quality of learning and teaching with responsibility for improved pupil outcomes including lesson observations
- Take a lead in securing and embedding the pastoral and behavioural support systems present in the school
- Ensure policies are translated into practice by staff and that you bring to the attention of SLT any which may need revisions or amendments
- Take assemblies where appropriate
- Act as a mentor for new staff and visitors
- Liaise with colleagues to identify group and individual training needs and provide support for colleagues within your area of responsibility
- Assist in the smooth running of the school at all times
- Attend Pupil Progress Meetings as required, holding staff to account for the progression of pupils and supporting the identification of the way forward
Assistant phase responsibility:
Be aware of the role of the AHT and assist them in leading and managing the phase, specifically the following:
- Encourage pupils’ motivation and enthusiasm, securing positive attitudes to learning and high standards of behaviour within the phase.
- Assist the AHT in monitoring, evaluating and reviewing pupils’ progress, achievement and attainment across the phase.
- Assist the AHT in monitoring, evaluating and reviewing the quality of learning and teaching within the phase in accordance with school policy and share judgments with teaching and support staff as appropriate.
- Challenge underperformance of learning and teaching within the phase and by promoting a high challenge high support culture.
- Support teachers, support staff and the Inclusion team to promote inclusive teaching methods.
- Support the pastoral care of pupils within the phase.
- Oversee the organisation of educational visits and curriculum enrichment activities within the phase.
- Assist the AHT in managing cover arrangements within the phase, e.g. first day cover, cover for CPD, PPA, NQT release.
- Assist the AHT in managing the timetabling of staff within the phase.
- Lead, develop and enhance the teaching practice of others
- Have a detailed professional knowledge of the national curriculum in relation to the phase
- Be accountable for the work of teachers and support staff and those assigned to the phase.
- Develop and improve subject knowledge and pedagogy within the phase.
- Ensure the promotion of methods that enable all pupils to learn effectively
- Enable colleagues to challenge and inspire pupils, expecting the most of them, so as to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum within the phase.
- Disseminate examples of ‘good practice’ in learning and teaching, effective planning and provision across the phase
Curriculum responsibility:
- Have a joint responsibility with the SLT and other middle leaders for the development of a whole school approach to the curriculum
- Lead and develop the specified curriculum areas with the curriculum team throughout the school – including co-ordinating the formulation of written guidelines, resources and the information for staff, parents/carers and governors to develop best practice
- Participate in regular curriculum meetings with team members, delegate tasks and manage and review their work.
- Monitor, review and evaluate relevant curriculum areas to ensure that they are being effectively delivered throughout the school
- Develop and maintain a whole school approach to the curriculum areas including recording and assessment and the use of tests, to ensure equal access for all pupils
- Provide the headteacher and/or other relevant staff with relevant subject, curriculum area or pupil performance information
- Accountable to the headteacher for all delegated curriculum and management tasks.
Administrative tasks:
- Monitor the budget for the curriculum areas to ensure that cost centres are being used effectively to support the delivery of the curriculum
- Monitor the use of resources within curriculum areas
- Be responsible alongside the curriculum team for the organisation, planning and evaluation of the specified curriculum areas
- Be responsible alongside the curriculum team for the organisation of all assessment tasks within the specified curriculum areas
Staff development:
- Lead and participate in staff training and development opportunities as appropriate for the specified curriculum areas and promote a whole school approach in conjunction with the SLT and middle leaders
- Act as a mentor or consultant to colleagues and encourage collaboration, co-operation and teamwork
- Keep abreast of current developments in your management and curriculum areas and disseminate information as appropriate
Exercise of particular duties:
- Perform any reasonable duties as requested by the Headteacher
